The OM Field

  • What is OM? It is the critical function that creates and distributes products and services; improves the quality of products and services; and ensures streamlined and efficient business processes.
  • Practical; with many career options in manufacturing firms in production, purchasing, quality control, distribution and supply chain management; in service firms as general management and logistics/supply chain management; in consulting firms as business process and quality improvement consultants.

OM Major at UD

  • State-of-the-art curriculum commended by industry and academics: Blend of analytical skills and managerial/organizational skills imparted.
  • Easy to double-major; enhanced opportunities in other functional careers in marketing, finance, and accounting.
  • Can be completed even if you declare it in Junior Year – 2nd Semester or Senior Year – 1st Semester.
  • Strong Industry Support by Operations Management Advisory Council (OMAC): Delphi Automotive, Elder-Beerman, Fifth-Third Bank, GE, GM, MeadWestvaco, Miami Valley Hospital, NCR, Standard Register, Wendy’s.

OM Major Success

  • Launched in Fall 2001; First class graduated in May 2003 (21 students)
  • Hands-on Experience through Capstone Consulting Projects (OPS 495): Capstone student projects in Winter 2003 identified $3.2 million in one-time savings; $9.4 million in yearly cost savings.
  • Career opportunities emerged for graduates in firms like Abercrombie, Houghton-Mifflin, IBM, MeadWestvaco, and NCR.
  • Course Requirements for the OM Major

    In addition to your general graduation requirements (i.e., the university general education requirements plus the School of Business core courses), the OM major consists of four core courses (13 credit hours) and three electives (9 credit hours).

    The four core courses are: OPS 350: Business Process Management (3 hours); OPS 401: Operations Planning and Control (3 hours); OPS 480: Supply Chain Management (3 hours); and OPS 495 (4 hours): Capstone OM Project. Note that OPS 301 is a business core course that must be taken no later than OPS 350.

    The three OM electives can be selected from a list of more than 25 courses from various departments. These electives can be scheduled around the four core courses.
