Management Information Systems (M.I.S.) is a career area which focuses on two related topics:
The MIS field deals with all the information and problem solving activity of a modern, successful organization. The MIS discipline brings together the various business areas, computer science, and quantitative analysis techniques. This program provides the theory and methodology to analyze, design, implement, and manage an organization's information technology and systems. Learn more about the MIS field and how it differs from other information technology-related disciplines. What Are the Key Features of the MIS Program? The MIS program at UD is one of the best available anywhere with a strong technical component, a two semester "live" design project with a Dayton-area firm, and an emphasis on professional communications skills, including video-taped presentations. Due to the fact that the University is located near a major city, there are abundant opportunities for practical work experience such as internships, cooperative education, and interaction with MIS professionals through our MIS Advisory Board. What is the Employment Outlook for MIS Majors? There is a very high demand for qualified and competent information systems professionals in industrial, business, governmental, and educational organizations. Short-term and long-term employment opportunities are outstanding. Salaries are the highest among business disciplines. What Do MIS Majors Do? Businesses and other organizations have a strong need for individuals who understand the various business functions and who understand the role of computers and other information technologies in modern organizations. Specifically, this program prepares individuals for careers as the following:
in almost any business function with special expertise in Technology and Information Systems. What Else Can I Do Other Than Major in MIS? MIS makes an excellent companion to another major, almost any other business and many non-business majors. Someone minoring in MIS often serves as a liaison from a functional area (e.g., marketing or accounting) to MIS on systems development projects, or is a member of the systems development team representing the interests of the functional area. Other minors simply want to be "power users" of information technology. For business school majors, an MIS minor consists of four courses:
Students from other schools must also take BAI103L, DSC210, DSC211, and MIS301. Of special interest today is e-business. A special e-business minor now exists.
