University of Dayton Safety Practices

Pre-trip Events/Procedures

We engage students in a number of procedures prior to departure that are designed to heighten their attention and concern for safety issues while overseas, including the following:

  • Attendance at a general orientation to overseas study (mandatory)

  • Participation in a safety orientation session (mandatory), conducted by the Director of International Business and the Center for International Programs at UD.

  • Review & discussion of U.S. Department of State document on Safety While Traveling Abroad

  • Completion of an emergency contact sheet (that can be used to contact parents, guardians, etc.)

  • A Health Information form that details any special health issues (e.g., allegies, other conditions)

  • A Health Insurance documentation form

  • Completion of a form that provides supplemental insurance to existing policies (paid for by UD through student fees)

  • Meet with their UD Professors where class and behavior expectations are further amplified

  • Completion of a behavioral expectation form that lays out our high expectations for their behavior while overseas and representing the University of Dayton

  • Register with the U.S. Embassy in the country in which they will study (and additional countries in which they will travel).  This is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State

  • Attend a meeting that discusses practical issues of traveling overseas (e.g., packing, currency, language resources, etc. - resources that are provided on this site too)

  • Attend a final pre-departure meeting with the Program Director and the Associate Dean or Dean to remind all of the above information

  • Parents are send a complete packet of information that provides detail about the study site, accommodations, contact phone numbers, website information, and more

Safety While Overseas

  • UD assigns a faculty site coordinator for each overseas study site to act as a resource for students

  • UD purchases cell phones for faculty teaching overseas and these numbers are made available to students for use in emergencies.

  • We also purchase cell phones for every student (these have min. minutes built into them; we recommend their use only for true emergencies since they are many other ways to contact your son/daughter)

  • Behavioral expectations are re-emphasized during the first class meeting

  • Violations from expectations are documented in meetings with the student and multiple infractions are cause for program dismissal (serious infractions may result in immediate dismissal)

  • Students are held to the same level of expectations regarding classwork and studying while overseas.

  • Students leaving the program site/their housing for over 24 hours are required to sign out (with information on their plans and contact information) with the faculty site coordinator.  Students may wish to travel on non-study days and this would be the exclusive use of this procedure.

  • In our programs involving more than 1 city site, transportation is arranged by UD and travel is completed with the group

  • Accommodations are screened by the Director of International Business.  Dr. Sekely makes trips overseas to preview the accommodations prior to the summer of travel.

  • Meet with their UD Professors during the first class at which time class and behavior expectations are further amplified/reviewed

  • Registration with the U.S. Embassy in the country of study provides a method to track the student if safety issues arise or if a passport is lost or stolen

  • All contact, passport, and other health/safety information is kept with the Director of International Studies, Dr. Sekely, at the University of Dayton.  Thus, any need for back-up information about itineraries, contact information, passport data or more can be easily retrieved in the event they are lost or stolen.

  • Students have access to this website that provides information on travel within their city and country site (e.g., maps, weather, tourist information, cultural information about the country and more).
