Basic Facts
Augsburg is located in southern Germany, in the state of Bavaria, 62 kilometers (about 40 miles) northwest of Munich.  In the city you are never far from where you want to go.   Roughly two-thirds of Augsburg is made up of woodland, farmland, and fields.  Residential and commercial buildings or road/rail facilities occupy just one-third of the area.
There are currently about 280,000 people living in and around the city.  At its pinnacle, Augsburg was one of the wealthiest and most important cities in all of Europe.  And, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany.  Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years, having been founded in 15 B.C.!  The Roman Emperor Augustus gave his stepsons Drusus and Tiberius the task of subjugating the Rhaetain peoples of the Alps and Celts further north.  A legion, which set up camp on the banks of the Lech and Wetach in 15 B.C., provided the means for founding the Roman city of Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg). For four centuries Augsburg was part of the Roman Empire, and for five hundred years it was a free Imperial City.

Universität Augsburg (University of Augsburg)
The university could be called the younger brother of the University of Dayton, a rare statement about a German university (many of which have medieval roots).  The Univ. of Augsburg, however, was founded in 1970  (U.D. was founded in 1850).  There are a lot of different facilities and buildings within a very nice campus with different lakes, nicely landscaped and even a small biergarten.

When in Augsburg…

The Rathaus (Town Hall)

Built between 1615 and 1620, this Town Hall is the most important secular Renaissance structure north of the Alps. It expresses the self-assurance of the then Free Imperial City of Augsburg.  The Golden Hall, with its imposing portals, gold-leaf coffered ceilings and murals, is very beautiful to see. The Perlach Tower next to the Rathaus is one of Augsburg´s landmarks.  At a height of over 70 meters, the tower offers good views on clear days, signaled by the flying of a yellow flag.

The Fuggerei
The "Town within a Town" was Founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Rich and his brothers as the world's first social settlement for hardworking, honest but impoverished citizens who were Catholic. The settlement comprises 67 two-story structures housing 147 apartments, a church and a simple, elegant fountain. The yearly rent is, to this day, one Rhinish Gulden - equivalent to about one Euro.

Augsburger Dom (Cathedral of Augsburg)

First mentioned in 823 BC, the romanesque and gothic frescoes, lovely painted vaults, and four panel paintings were notably created by Holbein the Elder. The windows of the prophets Jonas, Daniel, Hosea and Moses are examples of the oldest representative stained glass in Germany.
