Economics for students planning for graduate study in economics

Students who wish to pursue a career as a professional economist, doing economic research and/or teaching at a college or university, need to prepare for graduate study in economics. A PhD degree is generally required for this level of work. Preparation for graduate school requires strong math skills as well as an excellent grounding in economic theory and application. A major in Applied Mathematical Economics is strongly recommended.

A student who majors in Economics should replace the required courses in Calculus and Statistics as follows and include MTH 308, MTH 310 and ECO 441 in their studies.

Calculus: MTH 168, MTH 169 and MTH 218 are strongly recommended and are prerequisites for the other math courses recommended.
Statistics: MTH 367-MTH 368 or MTH 411-MTH 412 are strongly recommended and are prerequisites for the other math courses recommended. MTH 308: Foundations and Discrete Mathematics and MTH 310: Linear Algebra and Matrices are strongly recommended. ECO 441: Econometrics should be one of the Economics electives chosen.
