Arts & Sciences Economics Major

It is not possible to fully understand business decisions, politics, social reforms, or international relations without an understanding of the economic aspects of these issues. Economics provides a logical way of analyzing the public and private choices we need to make in our lives.

The Economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences allows students to complement their economics coursework with studies in the other social sciences, humanities, and mathematics. This major is an excellent preparation for careers in public policy, business, and government and for graduate programs such as law school.

Students in the School of Business Administration may choose the new Business Economics major.

Course requirements for the Arts and Sciences Economics major are:

BA in Economics from the College of Arts and Sciences


ECO 2031: Principles of Microeconomics
ECO 2041: Principles of Macroeconomics
ECO 346: Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis
ECO 347: Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis
ECO 490: Senior Seminar in Applied Economics
15 semester hours of Economic electives
Calculus: MTH 148 or MTH 128-MTH 129 or MTH 137-MTH 138 or MTH 168
MTH 207: Introduction to Statistics (can substitute DSC 210 and 211)
BA degree requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences

1 Economics majors must earn C or better in ECO 203 and ECO 204.


The Department of Economics and Finance also collaborates with the Department of Mathematics to offer a major in Applied Mathematical Economics.

The Economics major is excellent preparation for a wide range of employment and graduate education opportunities. The proper selection of courses within the economics major and to accompany the economics major will better prepare students for their desired future.
